![]() Hop Planting August 2002
Mid August UpdateIt's been rather busy and we haven't updated the web site as often as we had planned to. Here is the synopsis of the status so far.Insect Damage The apparent insect damage seems to be either a misidentification or not serious. All the hops that had problems are doing well. We do have some chewed leaves but nothing that was too bad. Micro Nutrient Problems While many of the plants still show some problems on the new leaves we have decided not to worry about the potential nutrient problems. With exceptions of certain varieties all are doing well so we decided just to document the issues and continue on. Water Issues This year we are in a severe drought. While our particular ditch does still have some water we have not seen the normal rainfall nor do we have normal irrigation water available. To maintain the hop plants we have resorted to hand watering each plant with a hose once a day or once every couple of days. We are trying to water deeply to stimulate deep roots but the soil is drying out very fast. Hop Cones! Several plants already have large hop cones and some are approaching harvest time. A1, the Chinook is the most developed. Here is what the cones look like on August 22.
