Trellis Structure Hop Planting June 2002 Hops grow rapidly and must be supported on a trellis sructure. For our project we chose an ancient form of hop trellis with a central tall pole and wires out to smaller posts. Here is a picture of the wires connected to a pulley so we can lower the structure at harvest time. Wire Attachment Our trellis structure is currently enclosed by a welded wire fence to prevent sheep from eating the new hop shoots. We will be removing this later to let the sheep use the hops for shade. Trellis Structure Planting For planting the hop rhizomes we mixed the soil from the planting holes with an equal amount of composted sheep manure. Mixing Dirt This mixture was used to fill the holes and the rhizomes were placed at a depth of about 2 inches with the shoots pointing up per planting instructions from the vender. Planting a Rhizome Soil Temperature Logging In addition to the hops themselves we also buried a soil temperature data logger. We are taking a sample of the soil temperature every 90 minutes. We have a second data logger measuring air temperature. We will retrieve these data loggers in 120 days and post results then. Hop Varieties The six varieties we have selected for this trial are Centennial Chinook Horizon Red Vine Sterling Vanguard We have 2 plants of each variety. To randomize the locations for the planting of each variety within the set we used a random number to decide which variety would be located in each space. We have two sets of hops. Set A is the southern set and set B is the northern set. The variety locations are: A1 - Chinook A2 - Horizon A3 - Red Vine A4 - Centennial A5 - Vanguard A6 - Sterling B1 - Vanguard B2 - Centennial B3 - Horizon B4 - Chinook B5 - Sterling B6 - Red Vine We will be documenting how each variety grows during this test.
